This how-to session provides an overview of basic accounting concepts as they apply to nonprofit organizations and is geared for board members and fundraising staff. Content is designed for participants without formal education in accounting and will be presented in layman's terms with real-life examples relatable for nonprofits of all sizes. Participants will learn how to read and truly understand a statement of financial position and statement of activities. Key differences between development reports and income statements will be explored. Participants will be equipped with the knowledge they need to communicate effectively with their accounting departments and treasurers. Participants will also learn how to develop realistic budgets.

Details

Stephanie Cory has dedicated her career to the nonprofit sector since 2003. She has served as an executive director for a health advocacy organization as well as held development and program management roles for nonprofit organizations serving seniors and people with disabilities. She has also consulted for a variety of educational and arts organizations. Stephanie is an adjunct faculty member for Villanova University's College of Professional Studies where she teaches a variety of fundraising topics.

Stephanie has been a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) since 2008 and received her designation as a Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy (CAP¨) from the American College in 2007. A graduate of the Association of Fundraising Professional's Faculty Training Academy, she has been an AFP Master Trainer since 2010. Stephanie is a Certified Governance Trainer through BoardSource and a licensed consultant through the Standards for Excellence¨ Institute. She earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Southern California.

Stephanie draws from her own varied experience as a board member. Her includes officer roles for a professional association, president of her local Junior League, and treasurer for one of Delaware's oldest all volunteer organizations. She is a frequent speaker on a variety of philanthropy and governance topics. Her experience ranges from full-day board retreats to breakout sessions at international conferences. She is also a published author.
